The Alabama Democratic Party is distancing itself from racially inflammatory comments made by a Democratic lawmaker. In a written statement, the party said the comments made by state Rep. Joe Mitchell (D-Mobile) "do not represent the values of Alabama Democrats." Mitchell came under fire for an e-mail exchange with a Jefferson County man, who asked lawmakers not to pass gun control measures. Mitchell responded by sending an angry e-mail, referring to the man's ancestors as, "slave-holding, murdering, adulterous, baby-raping, incestuous ... kin folk.'' The Democratic Party said Mitchell lowered the level of discourse, adding that the party, "deplores any rhetoric that divides the people of Alabama."
